Downeast Credit Union has been serving membership in our area since the organization was founded in 1941 as St. Croix Federal Credit Union and is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. St. Croix Federal Credit Union was originally chartered to serve employees of the mill, wanting them to have access to affordable loans and optimal savings products. Over the years, the credit union has expanded its geographic reach and now serves over 22,000 members across its eight locations in Maine. The People Helping People philosophy was the cornerstone of the credit union’s charter, and that still rings true today, 80 years later, as DECU remains committed to its historical corporate culture.
“Succeeding as a business for 80 years is an impressive feat; I thank our founders for their vision and audacity in starting a co-op credit union where members have the ultimate say in how their organization is run,” states DECU CEO Joe Moses. “Our Team of employees is proud to serve our membership and remains a trusted source for the Downeast region’s banking needs. We look forward to sharing the excitement of our 80th Anniversary with the communities we serve.”
Downeast Credit Union will be celebrating this milestone anniversary with a campaign called 80 Ways We Wow Ya through the remainder of 2021 as a fun way to give back to our members and communities we serve.
The first Wow Story from DECU’s 80 Ways We Wow Ya campaign is impressive. On March 5, 2021, the credit union donated land to the Town of Machias located at 2 Elm Street across from the Grange Hall. With the parcel of land located near Bad Little Falls, the Town of Machias hopes to someday utilize the space as a naturally contoured amphitheater where community members can enjoy live music and entertainment.
“The credit union is pleased to collaborate with the Town and give back to our community,” adds DECU Regional Branch Manager, Joanne Cushing. “In preparing the land for donation, DECU oversaw the removal of a structure so that the Town could easily take over the land without liability or hassle. All of the Team at Downeast shares in the excitement of utilizing this space alongside friends, family and neighbors as a future community gathering spot, sure to ‘Wow Ya’ for many years to come.”
