Who Can Become a DECU Member?

Membership at Downeast Credit Union is open to those who live, work, worship or attend school in the following Maine counties: Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot, Sagadahoc, Waldo and Washington, as well as the towns of Brunswick and Harpswell in Cumberland County. Membership is also available to immediate family members of existing members, those living in the same household and organizations of such persons who all live within the field of membership.

The first step to becoming a member is to open a share savings account with a minimum deposit of $5.00.

To become a member, please do the following:

  1. Review our Membership qualifications above to be sure you qualify.
  2. Open an account online or visit any of our branch offices and make a minimum deposit of $5.00.
  3. Verification - DECU shall verify the identity of the applicant by requesting presentation of at least two forms of current identification (ID). The primary ID must have a photo with signature, physical description, date of birth, ID number and expiration date.
  4. Applications not submitted in person must be notarized and include the identification as stated in #3.
  5. Use our Switch Kit to help move your direct deposit and other items over to your new account. Our Account Experts can help, too! Call us at 800-427-1223..

Account Types Available

Downeast Credit Union welcomes all family members. We have accounts for everyone.

If your child has a Birth Certificate & Social Security Number, and meets the credit union's membership qualifications, he or she can become a member of the credit union.

Members between the ages 13 and 17 can learn the basics of managing their finances before they leave home. This age category can learn how to use an ATM or Debit Card so long as their parent or guardian is on the account.
