Maine Sellers Receive Fraudulent Checks

Posted on February 5, 2021 | Fraud Defense

The Maine Credit Union League alerted us to check fraud that is being seen in parts of Maine. The check fraud involves fake cashier’s checks appearing to be drawn off a Maine credit union, but in fact the checks are counterfeit.

As more and more people are selling items through online marketplaces, sellers are encouraged to be extra vigilant when accepting payment by check.

DECU reminds our members:

■ Verify funds by speaking with a credit union manager when you deposit the suspect check (explain the situation and express your concerns)

■ Never share your bank account information with anyone and use caution when making transactions with cashier’s checks

■ Do not accept a check for more than the amount you requested

■ Inspect any check you receive, looking for signs that it’s a fake (misspelled words or poor quality paper)

■ Remember, no one gives away money for free
