Beware of grandparent scams!

Scammers have been targeting people over the age of 60, but anyone can fall victim. This scam happens when contact is made either via social media, email or phone and the victim is told that a loved one is in trouble.

It could be that they were arrested or were in an accident and in the hospital but there is always some urgent reason that money is needed NOW to get them out of crises. Sometimes they even go so far as to threaten the victim’s safety.

The scammer than tells the victim to obtain the cash immediately. They may provide a mailing address or actually have someone actually physically meet them for the exchange.

Acting in urgency is usually an indication of a scam. If something seems suspicious, it likely is.
