The Maine Credit Union League has selected Downeast Credit Union as the First-Place winner of the Dora Maxwell Service Award in the $250 million to $1 billion asset category for 2022. The Dora Maxwell Service Award is presented nationwide to credit unions who promote social responsibility and community service achievements.
The award is named for the credit union pioneer, Dora Maxwell, who worked to improve the living standards of the underserved. She held numerous volunteer positions at local and national levels in addition to organizing hundreds of credit unions and worked with many organizations on behalf of the poor. Credit unions receive this award for involvement in activities that help other people or strengthen the structure of a community; this may include raising funds for charity, educational activities, or community involvement projects.
Downeast Credit Union received the award for their “80 Ways We Wow Ya” campaign which included 80 acts of kindness and community giving throughout their 80th anniversary in 2021.
“We are thrilled to be recognized with the prestigious Dora Maxwell Award! Our ‘80 Ways’ campaign proved to be a rewarding way to celebrate our 80th year in business,” states DECU marketing director, Kristie Libby. “Our entire Team pulled together to fulfill the 80 acts, making work more gratifying and our communities even stronger.”
In response to receiving news of the award, senior vice president of lending and branch operations, Tonia Lanier, added, “We are honored to receive this award. It was uplifting to watch the excitement during our anniversary campaign as our Team Members contributed to our communities. The Team’s passion for helping was captured in this campaign and made me even more proud of the incredible coworkers we have!”
As a First-Place recipient in Maine, Downeast Credit Union will now move onto the national competition for the award which will be selected by the Credit Union National Association later this year.
